Your feather dress and sequin heels are ready to hit the dance floor, and your bold red lipstick is just waiting to be applied. When you get ready for nighttime festivities, don't forget dramatic eye makeup.

If past attempts at a smoky eye have left you looking more like the Joker from Batman and less like a sultry Kardashian, here are a few key tips to follow.

Makeup artist Sasha Grossman suggests beginning with an eyelid primer. Products like Benefit's Stay Don't Stray wand create a smooth base for your eyeshadow and prevent makeup from melting or creasing throughout the night.

Stick with shadows in neutrals tones like shades of brown, bronze and plumb for a naturally glamorous look. Blend the darker hues into the crease and towards the outer edge of your eye, leaving lighter shades at the inward corner.

Line your eye with a strong black liner and finish with false lashes. Small individual clusters are easy to apply and also feel and appear more natural than strip eyelashes.

Give yourself a confident wink in the mirror and now you're ready to party.
