One of the most common rules of comedy is to never break character. The comedic geniuses that grow up on Saturday Night Live have created some of the most laugh-inducing personas, including Bill Hader as Stefon, Chris Farley as Matt Foley, Will Ferrell as Roger Clarvin, just to name a few.
These actors, and others like them, have perfected the art of improv, although everyone breaks character now and then. Some even made it part of their charm -- Jimmy Fallon, anyone?
