The social web is an open space for conversation. It allows us to reach far corners of continents we couldn't possibly get to by foot, making the world a smaller place. We're all connected, all the time.

Over the past five years, Mashable has recognized June 30 as the day to celebrate the networks and users that bring this social culture to life. Each year, thousands of people worldwide attend Social Media Day Meetups, and share stories about how they've harnessed social media to engage others.

This week's Mashable Photo Challenge centers on this digital revolution. Show us a photo that illustrates connections. We encourage you to be creative; there are many places to find people and things bonding together.

When you walk on the streets, look up. You'll likely see wires, fences, tree branches and pipes connecting one object to another.

If you're into art, create something that depicts the idea of connecting, and photograph it.

Or look for people, since they're always connected in one way or another. They could be holding hands, linking arms, walking a dog with a leash or sharing a pair of earphones.
