Which DIY Hack Stole the Show at Social Media Day?

Social media is such an intrinsic part of our lives these days that it's hard to remember a time without it. What once was a niche medium solely for the tech-savvy, is now a way for billions of people to communicate all over the world. In 2012, Mashable launched Social Media Day as a way for the connected generation to celebrate the digital revolution we're all a part of.

This year, Mashable chose a unique way to celebrate our love of social media. In the spirit of summer, we teamed up with The Home Depot to challenge our community with a "call to hacktion." We asked our communities to find ordinary household items and turn them into something different -- whether that meant using tubes and spray paint to make a light saber, or turning terracotta pots into a meat smoker -- anything that inspired their DIY creativity.

We divvied Mashable interns into teams and tasked them with building tech- or social media-inspired hacks, which were on display at our Social Media Day party in New York on Saturday, June 29. Social Media Day attendees interacted with the hacks and voted for their favorite of the four:

Each of the hacks was a big success, and attendees at Social Media Day had a blast playing around with them. But alas, in the end there could only be one winner, based on attendee votes. And that winner was ... the real life Instagram filter!
