These Solar-Powered Street Lights Deliver 98% Power Conversion Efficiency [VIDEO]

They charge during the day from the light of the sun and light streets at night -- and they could be the future of sustainable street lighting. NXP Semiconductors teamed up with Philips to create new, energy-efficient solar street lamps, which were demonstrated this week at CES.

The Solar Gen2 can reportedly convert 98% of the energy it takes in into light at night.

"By making Solar Gen2 as power efficient as possible, we've produced something which is genuinely groundbreaking while remaining affordable in those countries that can benefit the most from it," said Rene Penning de Vries, CTO at NXP Semiconductors. "Harnessing the energy of the sun as effectively as possible means reduced electricity demand and a more robust infrastructure."
