LAS VEGAS -- Sony is bringing 4K to action cameras.

Sony unveiled its first 4K-ready action camera, the FDR-X100V, which allows users to record point-of-view shots in full 4K resolutions.

The camera, which will go on sale in March for $500, can shoot videos with a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels and comes with a new wind noise reduction feature that maintains high sound quality despite wind noise. It's also water resistant to protect against splashes, drops in the snow, rain and other wet conditions.

The camera includes Sony's Steady Shot feature, which stabilizes videos, though this feature only works when shooting in HD, not in 4K.

Sony has also added smarts that make it easier for users to take advantage of their 4k videos with Highlight Movie Maker, which automatically analyzes footage to pick out the best parts and separates these into smaller clips. It does this by detecting smiles, special tricks and other highlights from the video.

Sony also unveiled an updated version of its 4K camcorder, the HDR-AX33. The camera shoots in full 4K resolution and also takes advantage of Sony's SteadyShot stabilization features. It's a step-up from last year's $2,000 model, which also debuted at CES.

The company has also knocked nearly a thousand dollars off the price tag: the newest camera will retail for $1,100 when it goes on on sale.
