Sony Flexes Its Wearable Tech Muscles With Core Fitness Tracker

LAS VEGAS -- Sony is diving into fitness trackers with its Core device, a tiny sensor-filled product that can slip into wearable "skins," such as a bracelet or armband. It unveiled the device at CES 2014, and we got a little hands-on time with it.

When slipped into a wristband (what Sony calls a "SmartBand"), the Core looks like any number of trackers out there, from the Nike+ Fuelband SE to the Fitbit Force. The band sports the Sony design hallmark of a silver-colored circular button.

However, it's the Core's Lifelog software that really makes it stand out, recording more than just steps. The idea is you can go back along your timeline to see what you were doing at any given time, bookmarking events you want to remember. It's like Facebook, but for your movement.

The device and accompanying software are due to launch in the spring.
