Sony execs didn't reveal much about the portable gamer's processor Wednesday night at the rollout event, but now there's more information, confirming a pair of powerful quad-core processors under the hood.

For those technically inclined, there will be a quad-core ARM Cortex A9 processor inside, and sharing the graphics duties alongside that will be a quad-core Power VR SGX534MP4+ GPU. This is a seriously powerful engine, certainly in line with last night's promise of the “most advanced” processors.

Add to that the 5-inch, 960×544-pixel OLED touchscreen display with a touchpad on the back, and those new analog joysticks, and you have a handheld gaming machine that will update the Sony PlayStation portable franchise with aplomb. Too bad it's not available until the end of this year -- at least 10 months away, ample time for competitors to catch up.
