Sony to Shut Down Optical Drive Business [REPORT]

Sony is planning to close its optical drive division Optiarc, Japan's Asahi Shimbun reports.

Optiarc, which holds a 10-15 percent share of the optical drive market, incurred huge losses to Sony in 2011, and Sony will reportedly shut it down by March.

Sony Optiarc was founded in 2006 as a joint venture between Sony and NEC, with Sony buying NEC's 45% share in 2008.
