Sony Announces Lighter PlayStation Vita and $100 PS Vita TV

Sony has announced two new products at its PlayStation event in Japan: a new, thinner and lighter version of its handheld gaming console PlayStation Vita, as well as PlayStation Vita TV, a small and cheap gaming console that connects to your TV.

Besides being 15% lighter and 20% thinner than the current model, the new PlayStation Vita will also have a more durable battery, an OLED screen and 1GB of storage memory.

The new PlayStation Vita will come in multiple colors -- pink, blue, grey, lime green, yellow and black. It will become available in Japan on October 10 for a price of 18,980 yen ($190).

PlayStation Vita TV is arriving to Japan November 4 and it will be even cheaper -- 9,954 yen ($100), hitting deep below the price of PlayStation 4, which will retail for $399.

Unfortunately, that price does not include the Dual Shock 3 controller required to play the games, but if you have a PS3 lying around, that shouldn't be too much of a problem.

The tiny console (6.4cm x 10.5cm) will launch with around 1,300 games. It will also have a very nifty feature (available at a later date), allowing you to "stream" PlayStation 4 games from an existing PS4 located in your house.

Finally, Sony also unveiled that PlayStation 4, which comes to the U.S. mid-November, will become available in Japan on February 22, for a price of 41,979 yen.
