The pit bull has a tough reputation-- one that photographer Sophie Gamand aims to soften.
In "Flower Power, Pit Bulls of the Revolution," Gamand shows the dogs in a gentler, dreamier light than the harsh and violent one often portrayed.
Gamand told Mashable that the series is about challenging people to view pit bulls in a different light.
"I realized that the imagery associated with them was always harsh and gritty ... They were always portrayed as badasses," she says. "I myself was prejudiced until I realized you can’t judge an entire group based on a few bad elements. So, I took a different route to invite people to look from a different perspective."
All of the dogs Gamand photographed are awaiting forever homes in New York through three rescue groups: Sean Casey Animal Rescue, Animal Haven and Second Chance Rescue. She's also started a social media campaign that invites people to post photos of their pets with flowers alongside the hashtag #PitBullFlowerPower in support of this misunderstood breed.
Gamand is selling prints of the photos, and will soon release a 2015 calendar. All proceeds benefit the rescue shelters she's working with for the project.
