LONDON -- Music fans in the UK have pretty geographically tribal listening habits, a new interactive map from Spotify has revealed.
Their Musical Map: Cities of the World project has mapped the unique tunes played in nearly 1,000 cities across the world, from Vancouver to Auckland. Analyzing some 20 billion listener and track relationships, they've created playlists for each city based on what's disproportionately popular in each place.
"This is music that people in each city listen to quite a bit, which people in other cities also do not listen to very much," Spotify says. "So it is, exactly, the music that makes them different from people everywhere else."
It's revealed some surprising insights into listening habits across the UK, showing that we tend to lean pretty heavily on local bands and musicians.
In Cardiff, the Super Furry Animals and the Manic Street Street Preachers (from nearby Blackwood) dominate the playlist, with several tracks each, while in Glasgow, Deacon Blue and Biffy Clyro, who hail from Kilmarnock near the city, are frequently played.
Listeners in Manchester favour local heroes The Stone Roses and James (as well as Ocean Colour Scene from Birmingham) while Londoners tune in to Jamie XX. Comedy west country act The Wurzels, meanwhile, are actually, genuinely on the Bristol list.
You can browse each of the cities' playlists on the map, which will update bi-monthly to ensure the playlists reflect current tastes.
Globally, Florence and the Machine are big in New York, ex-Silverchair singer Daniel Johns does well in Sydney, and Los Nuevos Rebeldes owns LA.
