The square-toe shoe is a cautionary tale for all mankind

True story: Pilgrims sailed to America on the Mayflower wearing clunky square-toe shoes.

While the odd footwear may have been acceptable for a proper dinner then, today, it's really not. In the current day and age, self-respecting men everywhere should avoid them at all costs -- unless, of course, said man loves dad jeans and rocks out to all things Sting.

We all know a misguided guy (maybe it's you?) who unabashedly rocks these leather foot bricks and stomps the sidewalk with fervor. He's the same bro who tucks his button-up into his jeans, strapped together with a leather belt. He's the same guy who stands brazenly at the front of the line at a club and offers the bouncer a couple hundred to get in but still gets turned away.

He's undeterred.

There's something to be said about a determined man. In this case, it's not confidence; it's lack of self-awareness. Bro, those shoes don't look good.

"Square-toe shoes create a brutal geometry that is just hideous to look at," says menswear expert Brian Trunzo, cofounder of the popular SoHo shop, Carson Street Clothiers. "Really, those who are simply oblivious to aesthetics in general are the ones who sport them."

Trunzo says the curious shoes have been terrorizing menswear for years and are the worst style of footwear out there. According to him, the style is never, ever flattering to any man or any of his outfits.

"Literally any other shoe is better," he says.

Trunzo suggests a pair that follows the natural curve of one's foot. "Like glasses, not all shapes fit everyone the same way."
