J.J. Abrams: This was not the lightsaber Star Wars fans were hoping for.

The claymore-style saber, complete with a laser crossguard, was featured in the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer, wielded by a mysterious (presumably) Sith lord in a snowy forest.

Many fans have debated the new lightsaber design online. Some assume it will end up slicing off the wielder's fingers, while others insist it will actually prevent that gruesome fate by stopping the enemy's blade from sliding past the hilt. No one wants to end up like Luke Skywalker.

While fans generally gave mixed to negative reviews, most can at least agree that the iconic Jedi weapon of choice looks cool -- if not clunky. Of course, when all the debating was done, the only way for Star Wars fans to express their dissatisfaction with the new lightsaber was by making fun of it through memes.

Maybe in Episode VIII, Star Wars will debut a lightsaber chainsaw.
