'Star Wars Rebels' Teaser Includes Surprise Plot Twist

The 16-second teaser for Disney's upcoming animated TV series, Star Wars Rebels, doesn't reveal much, but it does paint a basic plot outline for the series.

As a Star Destroyer passes overhead -- the same opening from the original Star Wars movie, just without the Rebel blockade runner -- a youthful voice says, "To battle the Empire, a Rebel Alliance will form, the Jedi will rise, and you will know the power of the Force."

The show takes place at some point between Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, a span of 19 years. The "Jedi will rise" part is something of a surprise, since the Jedi were decimated at the end of Episode III, and we are told in Episode IV that they are all but extinct.

Disney announced the show in May and the trailer debuted during Monday night's premiere of Mighty Med. It will begin in fall 2014 with a one-hour special on the Disney Channel before moving to its permanent home, Disney XD.

The news comes after Cartoon Network declared it was ending the series Star Wars: The Clone Wars after five years.

Dave Filoni, supervising director of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, will serve as one of the executive producers alongside Simon Kinberg (Sherlock Holmes) and Greg Weisman (The Spectacular Spiderman). David Oyelowo, who had a brief role in Lincoln, will be a lead voice actor in an as-yet unknown role.
