Thursday marked Jon Stewart's final night as host of The Daily Show, so naturally his old friend and former colleague Stephen Colbert dropped by to wish Stewart well.

But though The Daily Show writers had a hilarious Lord of the Rings-themed farewell bit planned out, the real tear-jerker came when Colbert went off-script to offer Stewart a heartfelt thank you for his work these past 16 years.

Colbert's impromptu speech comes in at the 3:20 mark.

"All of us who were lucky enough to work with you for 16 years are better at our jobs because we got to watch you do yours," Colbert says to Stewart, who seemed unable to look his friend in the eyes for fear of bursting into tears. "And we are better people for having known you."
