If anyone was worried that Stephen Colbert's transition to a different kind of late night show would put an end to the politically-driven discussions that made The Colbert Report so famous, last night's show should assuage their concerns.

Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night, where the host confronted him about his self-professed similarities to Ronald Reagan, pointing out that Reagan's conservatism differed at times on a few key issues.

Colbert pressed him on that point, asking, "Raising taxes and amnesty for illegal immigrants," Colbert said. "Could you agree with Reagan on those two things?" -- to which Cruz replied, "No, of course not."

Colbert also grilled Cruz on his stance on gay marriage, which Cruz insisted should be up to the states to decide.

Though the discussion was frank and full of disagreements, it remained civil -- when Cruz's stance on gay marriage drew boos from the audience, Colbert stepped in to defend his guest.

"Guys, however you feel, he's my guest, so please don't boo him," he told his audience.
