LONDON -- Thousands in Britain were left without power and many people were evacuated from their homes after stormy weather left towns and cities under water.
Storm Desmond, the fourth named storm of the season, brought widespread heavy rain and wind to parts of northern England and Scotland with some places experiencing over 200 mm of precipitation, the UK Met Office said.
The British army helped to put down sandbags and move people from their homes. In Kendal, rescue teams were searching for an elderly man who reportedly fell into a swollen river.
Further flooding and disruption is expected as forecasters warn of more heavy rain on Monday in Scotland, northwestern England and Wales.
