Social Networking with StreetCred

Social Networking with StreetCred

StreetCred is a new social network targeting the hip hop culture with some high profile support. Prominent hip hop figures such as T.I., Common, and Snoop Dogg have setup profiles and are endorsing the site. The company also has deals in place with Warner Music Group and Sony/BMG to provide music and videos.

Beyond the relationships the company has in place, StreetCred offers fairly standard social networking features with many hip hop twists. For example, users can setup their own “Block” (a profile), add someone to their “Squad” (friend’s list), receive comments on their “Brick” (a comment wall), and build “Cred” (popularity and reputation). User profiles have a fairly standard and easy-to-use layout, with artist pages including music videos.

While StreedCred doesn’t offer anything ground-breaking in terms of new social features, it does do a good job of applying hip hop culture to online community. With the support of prominent artists and labels and a well designed site, StreetCred has a good opportunity for success, similar to what company’s like PureVolume have accomplished in the indie rock scene.
