Next to video games, one of the chief benefits of virtual reality is that it allows us to safely enjoy daring experiences first-hand that are perfectly executed by experts in real life.

The latest example: This VR experience posted by carmaker Subaru that shows off the company's rally racing team in action.

Filmed during the 2015 Lake Superior Performance Rally, the six-minute interactive video shows 2015 Rally America Champions David Higgins and Craig Drew whizzing through the lush forests of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Guided by co-driver Drew, who warns of upcoming twists and turns from his route book, Higgins allows us to fully take in what it feels like to take part in a high-speed rally race against the clock.

Although Subaru and immersive production company Ubivue started filming VR-style footage of its rally team back in 2014, this is the first that uses what the company calls a "peer through" technique, which allows VR viewers to look down into the vehicle right above the driver's head.

You can get the full experience using the iOS or Android Subaru Motorsports app and a Cardboard device. Or, if you want to try the 360-degree interactive experience without the app, you can give it a try using your cursor on the YouTube video (above) to move the viewing angle around.
