The image, released on October 10, shows the sun in a blend of two wavelengths of light (171 and 193 angstroms) to enhance its appearance. It's kind of like NASA's version of an Instagram filter.

The brighter spots are the sun's active regions, which emit more light and energy. These regions, according to NASA, are "markers of an intense and complex set of magnetic fields hovering in the sun’s atmosphere, the corona."

That's fancy space jargon that roughly translates to "the universe is a very spooky place."
