It took six and a half years to finish and you can't ever play it, but this is one of the coolest Super Mario Bros. 3 remakes we've ever seen.

Kjetil Nordin put more than 800 hours worth of research and crochet work into his SMB3-inspired blanket, which recreates the game's World 1 overmap. The seven-foot-long blanket is probably something a motivated grandma (or New York City subway rider) could throw together in a matter of days, but it wouldn't have the color authenticity that Nordin strove for.

Getting yarn in the right colors was a big focus for Nordin, who at one point scrapped half the work he'd done on the map's water because it looked purple. That setback cost him a week, according to Norwegian media outlet NRK.

A 31-year-old computer programmer, Nordin's done much more than pay tribute to a classic Nintendo game over the past six-plus years. He also found time to complete two university degrees, get his career rolling and win the Norwegian Sky Diving team championships -- twice. As with so many things that lead to Internet fame, the blanket was a side project.

Redditor AlexKingshill, a friend of Nordin's, shared an imgur gallery of the blanket on Reddit, where commenters quickly pointed out that the screenshot captured by the blanket appears to come from the Super Mario All-Stars version of the game.
