Surfers across the world have paid tribute to two missing Australians, Adam Coleman and Dean Lucas, with an "international paddle out", joining hands together in memoriam.

The two Australian tourists are believed to have been attacked by gang members while travelling in the Sinaloa region of Mexico, home to one of the country's most powerful drug cartels which shares the region's name. They were remembered in tributes across the globe in locations such as Mexico and Australia.

The ceremony, where surfers wade out into the water and join hands in a circle, was called a "fitting tribute" by Coleman's parents, Zena and Andy, according to the ABC.

"The love and solidarity shown towards us as this time is heartwarming and a comfort so massive it cannot be fully explained by words," Coleman's parents said.

Using the hashtag #AdamandDean, family members and friends have asked those who attended ceremonies to share their photos with them via social media.
