Security Camera Captures Moment Sinkhole Swallows Guard

Security cameras in Shenzhen, China captured this dramatic footage Wednesday showing a security guard falling into a four-floor-deep sinkhole that suddenly opened beneath him. The 25-year-old guard was rescued from the 16-foot-wide sinkhole and taken to a local hospital, but he later died of injuries sustained in the fall.

Shenzhen has been hit by earthquakes in the past, but no such event was reported in the area Thursday. Residents in Shenzhen however, recently complained of tremors from a construction site near the sinkhole's location, according to NBC News.

Sinkholes are most often formed by erosion or the slow removal of bedrock from directly underneath the surface. The phenomenon made headlines in the United States earlier this month when a Florida sinkhole opened up under a house, killing resident Jeff Bush.
