New Zealand, for such a small place you can sure create an awful lot of panic.
Reports from the New Zealand Herald were raving with unconfirmed accounts of Taylor Swift being in the country on Monday, Nov. 22. It all started with one tweet.
It's like the old saying goes: when you see a Taylor Swift at the airport, you will have a pleasant flight to New Zealand.— Maggie Shipstead (@MaggieShipstead) November 22, 2015
Sending the New Zealand contigent of Swift's fanbase into meltdown, another tweet from Kiwi comedian Melanie Bracewell basically caused a small eruption.
Hey guys I just saw Taylor Swift at the Auckland Airport— Melanie Bracewell (@meladoodle) November 22, 2015
It was a joke though, which Bracewell confirmed.
I did this tweet as an experiment to see if it'd make the nz herald website and it worked pic.twitter.com/9PPib0JRau— Melanie Bracewell (@meladoodle) November 22, 2015
And the original source let Swift's sentries know they might unfortunately be chasing their wildest dreams.
@Emmaa_1989 @TSwiftNZ I don't know! I was going to NZ, but I don't know where she was going. Sorry!— Maggie Shipstead (@MaggieShipstead) November 23, 2015
But as aforementioned in an above tweet, the New Zealand Herald had already picked up the story.
"If she is taking a pre-tour holiday in New Zealand it would be especially cruel considering she is skipping the country for her 1989 world tour," the Herald wrote.
But the Swift spark was once again set alight when a Kiwi actor decided to try his arm at humblebragging on Twitter.
Little Baz did me proud today.. Was flirting his little heart out with @taylorswift13 on @FlyAirNZ #nz3 this morning.. #7montholdgotgame — Ido Drent (@idodrent) November 23, 2015
The Herald just didn't know what to do with itself, and people were taking notice.
NZ Herald is excited. Taylor Swift is in NZ and the only person they could find who has talked to her was someone near the loo on the plane.— caffeine_addict (@caffeine_addict) November 23, 2015
Fans, who thought she'd be performing at the American Music Awards held on Sunday, Nov. 22 -- where she took out three awards -- just really wanted their gal to let them know where on Earth she was.
is Taylor Swift at the AMA's? is she in New Zealand? is she adopting a baby panda in China? nobody knows— christmas sophflake (@swifts1989) November 23, 2015
Update: Taylor Swift was just spotted in the North Pole with Santa and his elves! Looks like she won't be attending the #AMAs #Confirmed— emily (@youIovethegame) November 23, 2015
Residents of New Zealand were now in on it, throwing their hats into the mix of what was becoming a national running joke.

Just saw Taylor Swift in Wellington! Oh wait, it was just a street lamp.— Dean Watson (@dean197) November 23, 2015
But then, as if out of thin air, Swift's label Universal reportedly told the Herald she was in the country shooting a music video for "Wildest Dreams." Then, Kiwi website stuff.co.nz reported that Universal had "no idea" where she was.
What is the truth, New Zealand? We all love Tay -- and far be it from us to tell you to cool your jets about Swifty -- but take a minute, a breath and calm down.
Besides, even if we don't know where she is, we'll always have her enthusiastic dance moves.
