Youth armed with crossbow kills teacher at school in Barcelona, reports say

A student armed with a crossbow has attacked and killed a teacher at a school in Barcelona, Spain, according to reports.

Police have arrested the person suspected of the attack at the Instituto Joan Foster and are stationed outside the building. He's believed to be a teenage boy.

Several others were thought to be injured in the incident, which took place around 9:15 a.m. local time.

The boy started attacking a teacher and a student before the victim, a substitute teacher, attempted to intervene, receiving a fatal blow to the chest, El Mundo says.

The suspect had previously threatened to attack teachers, the paper reports.

The Mayor of Barcelona, Xavier Trias, has said he's "appalled" by the incident.

The attack took place in a public high school in the Sant Andreu neighbourhood, the Associated Press reports. Such schools are for pupils aged between 12 and 16.
