For those who use the blog tracking tool Techmeme, you'll be glad to hear there's now a mobile version. Mini Techmeme is being released today, along with versions for the political and celebrity blog trackers. Just add /mini to the end of the regular URL to get the mini version of that site. The Mini version removes the Discussion links and cuts back on bigger conversation clusters, allowing you to get the basics of what's going on. Because it's assumed that users want Recent Stories first, those are listed before the Top Items, but there's an option to jump to the top stories. For those who think the Recent Items are the most interesting, you can get a longer Recent Items view by visiting the URL followed by /miniriver. The sponsors, meanwhile, also get promotion through this service - they're pushed to the bottom of the page, however.

One of the big problems with converting a web service to one that's viewable on tiny mobile screens is that you need to remove a lot of the content. In the case of YouTube Mobile and Revver Mobile, for instance, it seems that human editors will make the decisions about what's worth viewing and what isn't. Although it goes against the ethos of social sites, this might actually be a better solution, since the user-generated ratings and view counts on these services is so easily gamed (look at Most Viewed on YouTube today and try to figure out how many of those users are cheating - most of them).
