LONDON — As Christmas sandwiches begin to fill supermarket shelves across the land, one supermarket has thrown caution to the wind and released a chocolate and cherry sandwich.

Tesco's new chocolate and cherry sandwich hit shelves last week, just in time for the festive season. But, the days of turkey and stuffing sandwiches could be numbered, given the extraordinary response elicited by this curious combination.

British people care a great deal about their Christmas sandwiches. So, naturally this bizarre concoction has caused a stir among sandwich purists who favour classic festive fare.

According to Tesco, the sandwich is composed of chocolate and cherry mascarpone, placed on a slice of cinnamon bread. While epicureans of the world might be seduced by such a description, those in search of a more conventional Christmas sandwich have other ideas.

Since news of the sandwich broke on the Shit London Facebook page, the sandwich has been the subject of contentious debate.

"Chocolate and cherry sandwiches? Has the world gone mad?" wrote one Facebook user.

"Turned my stomach this morning looking at this lol," wrote another.

The reactions on Twitter range from the impressed:

Chocolate and cherry sandwich in @Tesco meal deal. Boldly going where nobody has before #innovation #bravery #strong #bigdeal #sandwichgame

To the curious:

Really wanna try the tesco cherry and chocolate christmas sandwich! — Danielle (@Daaann_) November 17, 2015

To the downright angry:

@Tesco Cherry and chocolate works as a combination.. But not packed in a sandwich . Put it in a food processor then taste it.. You'll see !! — Andrew Rice (@ricey_boy) November 16, 2015

Tesco, we salute your originality. But the question remains, is it a bridge too far?
