LONDON -- British supermarket giant Tesco has updated its self-service checkouts with a festive message. Do not be alarmed.

In addition to greeting shoppers with a monotone robot urging that items be placed in the bagging area, Tesco have recruited the man with the sleigh to sprinkle some Christmas spirit over people's groceries.

It's no lie that Santa's "ho ho ho" has proved a matter of true contention amongst Tesco customers, but we think we've finally got to the bottom of it.

At first, there was some confusion.

I'm pretty sure the self service till in Tesco just wished me a merry Christmas— Gemma Mullin (@gemmamullin) December 7, 2015

Uncertainty.

I think the self service checkout in Tesco just wished me a Happy Christmas...— Robert (@KobertR) December 6, 2015

Fear.

In tesco earlier the self service till said 'Ho Ho Ho' at the end. Nearly shit my pants!— Lucy (@mucylill) December 7, 2015

Concern.

Even doubt.

But gradually, people began to appreciate the sentiment behind Tesco's move.

Am I the only one who LIKES @Tesco self service checkout wishing me a Merry Christmas!? It's Christmas! Cheer up you miserable buggers!— Kayleigh Evans (@KayzEvans) December 8, 2015

And it made them feel warm and fuzzy inside.

However, the new checkout voice has revealed people's incredibly low expectations for Christmas.

so happy that the first person this year to say happy Christmas to me was the voice inside the @Tesco self service till— Laura (@llauranewell) December 7, 2015

Others truly believe that Tesco holds the answer to world peace.

The self service machines in tesco greeted me with "Ho Ho Ho merry Christmas". For a brief minute all was right with the world!— Kate Morrissey (@KateAMorrissey) December 7, 2015

There are people feeling forced out of the country as a result of Tesco's Christmas cheer.

The self service tills in Tesco have a recorded message wishing you Happy Christmas on every transaction and that's why I'm leaving the UK— Tim Brown (@sockformation) December 8, 2015

Although others believe that leaving the capital will be enough.

Yesterday in Tesco I said 'thanks, you too' to the self check out wishing me Merry Christmas and now I have to leave London— Kate Scarlett Duffy (@ScarrrlettFever) December 9, 2015

A few people felt so strongly about the situation that they died.

THE SELF CHECKOUT MACHINE IN TESCO JUST SAID HOHOHOMERRYCHRISTMAS I DIED— els (@elliebangLADesh) December 9, 2015

And others took offense at Tesco's attempt at festive frolic.

Hey @Tesco - your check out called me a Ho Ho Ho today when I was buying my meal deal - I didn't know self service was so judgemental— Jess Booth (@jesskaboo) December 8, 2015

But the resounding feeling was one of joy, love and true Christmas cheer.
