The first scripts for The Walking Dead companion series must have been really, really good, because AMC just picked up two seasons of the still unnamed series, the network said Monday.

The first six-episode season will debut late this summer and the second season will air next summer, according to AMC.

This new series will be set in Los Angeles and focus on a new set of characters and storylines.

Cliff Curtis (Missing), Kim Dickens (Gone Girl), Frank Dillane (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) and Alycia Debnam Carey (Into the Storm) will star.

The pick-up itself does not come as a surprise. For the last three seasons, The Walking Dead has been the No. 1 TV program in adults 18-49, and extending that success would be the natural next step for any network.

“We take incredibly seriously the notion of building a satisfying companion series to the number one show on television” said AMC president Charlie Collier in a statement. "From the beginning of The Walking Dead on AMC, we’ve been asked questions about what was going on in other parts of the zombie apocalypse, and what it looked like as the world really did 'turn.' Through this new series, we’re going to find out."

Executive producer Robert Kirkman added that he takes the two-season pick-up "as a sign that [AMC] believe, like we do, that we've accomplished our goal of developing something original that can pay tribute to the original show and expand the world I created while at the same time having something new to say with this story."
