Sixteen years ago, The Blair Witch project stormed Sundance and ignited an indie horror revolution that still hasn't quite died down. Now its spiritual successor -- Robert Eggers' similarly titled The Witch, which also caused a stir at Sundance -- has its own chill-inducing trailer. It's easy to see why the movie has attracted such big buzz.

The period piece -- which is not, I repeat, not an adaptation of Roald Dahl's The Witches -- takes place in colonial New England, before the Salem Witch Trials. The story argues, perhaps, that those trials weren't entirely misguided. It's a time and place marked by mysterious crop shortages, disappearing babies, milk curdling into blood, and giant goat monsters. Also, a place where you should never, under any circumstances, play "peek-a-boo."
