The first trailer for Academy Award nominee Tom Hardy's upcoming FX miniseries teases quite the twisty tale.

In the 8-part, 1814-set drama series, Hardy plays James Keziah Delaney, a man who was believed dead but returns to his former life in London an irrevocably changed person. His return coincides with the death of his father, whose shipping empire was left to him. The problem? Rebuilding a new life for himself will be harder than it seems.

"His father's legacy is a poisoned chalice, and with enemies lurking in every dark corner, James must navigate increasingly complex territories to avoid his own death sentence," a logline from the network reads. "Encircled by conspiracy, murder, and betrayal, a dark family mystery unfolds in a combustible tale of love and treachery."

The series is a co-production between FX and BBC One. Hardy is billed as an executive producer on the project alongside Ridley Scott.

It is set to be released in 2017.

Hardy is currently up the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Revanant.
