The Tony Awards. The annual event doesn't exactly scream sexy and fresh. Until this year.

On Sunday night, a slew of hot celebrities flocked the red carpet, where they were photographed against a chic wall of bright green ivy. It was very modern, very un-Tony.

This was the reimagined Tony’s, with the Anna Wintour nod of approval, the only opinion in fashion that seems to matter.

There, on the red carpet stood Jennifer Lopez in a flowing Valentino Haute Couture gown. She was accompanied by supermodels like Joan Smalls in Givenchy and Kendall Jenner in Calvin Klein. Carey Mulligan wore a plum-hued Balenciaga, while Amanda Seyfried sported an off-the-shoulder Oscar de la Renta frock.

Wintour, Vogue editor in chief and Conde Nast artistic director, herself a theatre enthusiast, lent her hand to the cause in hopes of upping the Tony's fashion ante and therefore its relevance. It was a year ago, after all, that she deemed the Broadway's biggest night a fashion disaster.

She had a compelling argument. When was the last time in recent history that anyone talked about the Tony Awards with enthusiasm and awe? Was there a ever a red carpet moment so show-stopping that it became an iconic look for the fashion history books?

As we know, fashion has coincided with pop culture and is now woven into our culture so tightly that it’s become stitched into the same fabric of celebrity. With audiences as sartorial savvy as ever, fashion has not only become a means of expression, it’s now a moment that demands fantasy. Today's fashion moments prompt retweets, Instagram posts and Snapchat videos of both celebration and criticism.

After last night, the Internet wants to talk about the Tony Awards. Hopefully this year's vision represents the new direction of the annual gathering, formerly known to be more gauche that glamorous.

On Sunday night at the 69th annual Tony’s, elbow-to-elbow with the likes of Bradley Cooper, Harry Connick, Jr. and Nick Jonas was The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time star, Alexander Sharp. With the help of Wintour, he was dressed in a custom dinner jacket by menswear designer Billy Reid, living up to his very surname.

He eventually took the award for best actor in a leading play. Looking sharp, confident and sexy in his suit, he hit the stage as the likes of Helen Mirren, Joe Manganiello and Ken Watanabe --now peers-- looked on. Leaping toward the stage, he accepted his award, all in style.

His time had arrived.
