Twitter just took the lid off its list of 2011's most-popular keywords, many of which not only created enormous buzz among its 100 million active users but also piqued the interest of Mashable readers all over the world.
The list of top topics and hashtags gives us a glimpse of the people, events and things that inspired us to tweet. The list is broken down into several easy-to-digest categories such as tech (see gallery above) world, sports and entertainment.
"We saw history unfold in the Middle East, mourned the passing of Elizabeth Taylor, celebrated National Whipped Cream Day, and cheered for the Dallas Mavericks, Texas Rangers and Wayne Rooney," Twitter wrote in a blog post Sunday night. "We wondered about Charlie Sheen, speculated about the Sony NGP, and raved (or raged) about Rebecca Black. And we tYp3ed LyK tHi5."
Topping the list of hashtags were #egypt and #tigerblood -- two very different topics. People included #egypt in their tweets this year because of the Egyptian protests, revolution and subsequent resignation of President Hosni Mubarak. Meanwhile, "tiger blood" spawned from actor Charlie Sheen's mouth during his public meltdown after a falling out with his Two and a Half Men producer and the network.
Which topics are you surprised were included or excluded from the list? What will you remember most?
