Top knots may not cause hair loss, but definitely cause freakouts

In a twist sure to send a chill down any hipster bro's spine, rumors are swirling that the hairstyle known as the top knot may lead to hair loss.

But before bros start lopping off their beloved buns, let's take a deep breath and consider that there is no hard scientific evidence that this is true. Rather, the commotion began when Mic spoke to a dermatologist who claims to have seen an increase in traction alopecia among men, a condition that she says is caused by certain hairstyles that put tension on -- and ultimately damage -- hair follicles.

Later, the dermatologist clarified that there are plenty of folks who wear top knots that don't suffer from the type of condition she's describing. The key to avoiding damage, she says, is to keep the knot looser on the head -- which is probably good advice regardless.
