American ice dancers Meryl Davis and Charlie White made history on Monday, beating their Canadian rivals Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, the defending gold medalists, to reach the top of the podium -- a first for the U.S. Many more athletes competing in the 2014 Sochi Olympics fought for worldwide recognition Tuesday.

Dreams were cut short for American alpine skier Julie Mancuso when she missed out on a medal at the women's giant slalom, but the day was better for the English men's curling team, which defeated Norway for a spot in the finals.

The men's snowboard cross competition finally got underway Tuesday after it was postponed Monday because of thick fog. American Alex Deibold took home the bronze while France's Pierre Vaultier and Russia's Nikolay Olyunin snagged the gold and silver, respectively.

Other events included the men's freestyle skiing halfpipe final, men's speed skating 10,000m event and women's bobsleigh, among others.
