Tractis Makes Contracts Digital, At Last

Tractis is a new contract site that just entered private beta. The idea is simple: provide a place to create contracts, share contracts and sign them.

So why use this instead of a simple document sharing service like Zoho or Google Docs? A few reasons. First up, Tractis provides templates for contracts: a Non-Disclosure Agreement, for instance, must be one of the most used documents among technologists, so no need to write it from scratch. It seems users can also save templates, which might be of dubious legality: who is responsible if the language of those contracts makes them invalid? Legal questions abound, in fact, and I hope there's someone with a legal mind on site, and not just a developer or two.

The other huge, huge advantage: digital signing. No need to fax documents back and forth - just sign it using the little Java app and you're done. Once again, I'd need to be assured of whether such a contract could be binding, but it's certainly a great idea.
