A hilariously dark comedy about a guy faking his grandmother's death to get a couple of days off work has won the coveted Australian short film festival, Tropfest.

Tropfest, which began in a cafe in Sydney in 1993, is now the largest film festival of its kind in the world. This year, more than 600 entries were submitted and all had to contain the signature object -- a mirror -- and be seven minutes in length. Despite extreme weather conditions on Sunday night, Sydneysiders sat through the rain and lightning to watch the 16 finalist films battle it out.

The winning entry, Granny Smith, by Victorian filmmaker Julian Lucas, takes a ridiculous look at the lengths one will go to in avoiding work due to a hangover.

The runner-up flick, Red Nuts, takes a look at the wild night a miserable guy has after he discovers he has terminal cancer.

While in third place, Twisted shows a head-to-head between to men fighting over the same girl. The difference is they are using balloon toys in an epic battle scene.

The rest of the finalists can be watched on Tropfest's YouTube channel.
