Tumblr Secures $85 Million in Funding Amid Big Growth in Pageviews

Microblogging platform Tumblr has secured $85 million in funding, the company announced Monday, adding that it has seen its pageviews increase greatly this year.

Aside from the funding round led by Greylock Partners and Insight Venture Partners, the company shared impressive new stats: Tumblr's pageviews per month this year have gone from 2 billion to 13 billion; mobile pageviews have increased 17 times during the same period, and the 30 million blogs on Tumblr now generate more than 40 million posts per day.

Other investors in this round were The Chernin Group, Sir Richard Branson, Spark Capital, Union Square Ventures and Sequoia Capital.

Tumblr has experienced fast growth in recent months. This month, the budding startup surpassed 10 billion total posts, and in July, Tumblr had 13.4 million unique visitors in the U.S. according to comScore -- a 218% year-over-year increase.

In comparison, open source blogging platform WordPress powers more than 59 million websites, about half of which are hosted on WordPress.com, according to its official stats page. More than 299 million people view more than 2.5 billion pages each month on WordPress.com.
