Tumblr replies are back and better than ever.

Back in October, Tumblr removed the ability for users to reply to posts on their blogs. Users were not happy but the blogging service promised a new way of replying to posts was coming.

That day has arrived. Tumblr on Monday reintroduced Replies, now with more features. The company has also redesigned how Notes on posts appear.

The return of the Reply button will make plenty of diehard Tumblr users happy. The new feature also has more options than it did in the past. The old reply system only let the audience of a post reply to the author. Now, Replies can be conversational.

This also means that authors can reply to their own posts -- no third-party hacks required.

Users can also reply to a post multiple times. Replies will also now work on reblogs and not just original posts, as long as that setting is enabled.

Tumblr has also offered up a few options for Replies in settings.

Everyone can reply

Tumblr users you follow or users who have followed you for at least a week can reply

A safe mode where only Tumblrs you follow can reply

Tumblr says the reintroduction of Replies is just the start of more capabilities it plans to add in the future.

New Notes view

In addition to the new Replies feature, Tumblr is also updating and simplifying how Notes are displayed on posts.

In the past Notes were a mix of likes and reblogs, regardless of whether the content was adding commentary to a post or not. Now, Notes will be easier to read.

There is a new summary section that will show how many likes and reblogs a post has. Reblogs with commentary or replies to posts will show up underneath the Notes feature, making it easier to see conversation happening around a post.
