Television watching habits have changed a lot over the last few years. With so many ways to tune in, through mobile devices as well as traditional TV screens, watching TV has become a more social activity.
According to a recent Neilsen report, many TV series engaged their fans beyond simply watching from week to week. Critically acclaimed shows in particular, like AMC's Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead reached millions of their fans on Twitter throughout their seasons.

The following chart from statistics company Statista illustrates the top reaching TV shows on Twitter from September 2013 to May 2014.
The chart shows how many individual accounts viewed tweets were related to the show in question around the hours leading up to when the show aired. While not all Twitter users necessarily tweeted about their favorite shows, users were signing on and reading relevant tweets.
