Twitter Announces App for Firefox OS

Firefox OS -- the new mobile platform from Mozilla -- just had a big debut at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, announcing partnerships with big-name phone manufacturers such as Alcatel and ZTE as well as wireless carriers including Sprint. Now Twitter is jumping on the bandwagon, announcing support for an app on Firefox OS.

In a blog post, Twitter engineer Manuel Deschamps says Twitter for Firefox OS will be available when the first devices begin to ship later this year. The app will just like Twitter's mobile apps, with the same Home, Connect, Discover and Me tabs.

The new app will include support for one of Firefox's differentiating features, called Web Activities. The feature will allow Firefox phone users to tweet a photo from any app that also supports Web Activities, including the built-in photos app.

As Firefox OS is a platform built entirely on web standards such as HTML5, announcing support for the platform isn't that difficult for any developer that already supports the mobile web (as Twitter does). It's likely there will be many more announcements of support for Firefox OS apps as the platform ramps up to release.
