After years of neglect, Twitter announced Wednesday that it has fully revamped and updated the Twitter for Mac client.

The announcement came at Flight, Twitter's developer conference, taking place in San Francisco.

Twitter's Jeff Siebert gave a preview of the app, which is expected to launch later this year (no exact date was given). Screenshots of the app also appear to show shortcuts for inserting emoji and photos into messages and tweets.

The app will finally add support for inline video and Vine playback, Group DMs, notification highlights and inline replies.

It will also support a new dark mode, which looks really great.

Twitter for Mac started its life as Tweetie for Mac, way back in 2010. After Twitter acquired Tweetie for iOS and Mac, its development continued, before being sidelined a few years later. Over the last few years, only a handful of employees have maintained the app (its core maintainer left Twitter in 2014), which has been slow to adopt the newest Twitter features.

Other apps -- including Tweetbot -- have been a substitute for Twitter for Mac for diehard fans of the client.

There was no word on whether or not Tweetdeck -- the app Twitter purchased in 2011 -- will be getting an update too.
