Though the origin of the day is unclear, and it should not be confused with World Penguin Day (April 25), most agree that it's a day for educating oneself about the Antarctic bird and all things related to it.

Some users are spreading awareness of the penguin's endangered status, others are sharing as many penguin GIFs as they come across, and some are just declaring their love for penguins. Twitter doesn't discriminate on Penguin Awareness Day.

The hashtag is #PenguinAwarenessDay, should you decide you want to contribute to the unending celebration of the black and white bird on social media. Penguins may not have Twitter, but they'll appreciate the thought.

#penguinawarenessday is a positive step, but I'd rather see us move toward penguin acceptance and appreciation.— J.C. Lillis (@jclillis) January 20, 2016
