Typhoon Goni, one of the "twin typhoons" hitting Asia, pounded the northern Philippines on Friday. The country's weather bureau said Goni came with maximum sustained winds of 170 km/h (106 mph) and gusts of up to 205 km/h (127 mph).
However, some farmers who saw their land dried up due to a drought welcomed the rain, an official told AsiaOne.
Norma Lagmay, an agriculturalist for the province, said a previous drought caused about 19 million Philippine pesos (US$407,075) in losses from damaged crops and land.
Japan and Taiwan are braced for Typhoon Atsani, which gathered speed over the past two days over the Pacific Ocean, and was raised to "super typhoon" status.
