Uber's Taxi-Ordering Service Returns to NYC

Uber's taxi-hailing service is returning to New York City, the startup confirmed late Tuesday. The announcement follows the dismissal of a lawsuit against the service a little more than a week ago. Uber will now operate as part of the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission's one year e-hail pilot program.

You can now hail and track the progress of taxis, as well as black cars, using Uber's smartphone apps. However, you won't be able to pay taxi drivers using the Uber app, at least not yet, so make sure to have cash or credit card on hand. The taxi service will not be available at JFK, LGA or outside the five boroughs, per the pilot program's rules, Uber said.

Uber first introduced its on-demand taxi service in NYC in the fall of 2012, but it was shut down shortly thereafter, following a protest from the TLC which said that no apps for calling and paying taxis has been authorized in the city.

Uber, which was founded in San Francisco, operates in a number of other metro areas, including Los Angeles, Chicago and Atlanta. Earlier this week, Reuters reported that Uber was raising additional funding at a $1 billion evaluation, but the company swiftly denied the report.
