UberTwitter Brings Location-Aware Twitter Features to BlackBerry Users

If you use Twitter and BlackBerry, it’s easy to be envious of iPhone owners, since they have so many options when it comes to Twitter applications. TwitterBerry is probably the best known app for BlackBerry users, but it’s by no means as feature packed as many of the iPhone options like Tweetie or TweetDeck.

UberTwitter, which just released an update to its BlackBerry app today, offers a few interesting options for those looking for a TwitterBerry alternative.

The application has all of the Twitter basics covered. You can update your status, view your friend timeline, replies, and direct messages. Additional useful features include the ability to retweet anything, search Twitter, and also view currently trending topics. You can also take a picture while tweeting and have that pic appended to your tweet (an UberPic).

But where UberTwitter gets really interesting is its location-aware features. By utilizing the GPS on your phone and cell tower triangulation, UberTwitter knows where you are. And it then applies this data to the application’s other features. For example, you can search for all people tweeting about “lunch” within 10, 15, or 50 miles of you. You can also simply view a timeline of recent tweets from around your area.

Location data can be automatically appended to your tweets as well, and plotted on a Google Map, though for some reason, the map didn’t render in my test:

These are the type of features that would make a lot of sense for Twitter to implement themselves eventually, as you would in turn be able to get geo-data about all users who opted into the feature, versus just those using a specific app like UberTwitter. That’s clearly what Google is hoping to do with Latitude, and geolocation networks like Loopt and BrightKite are building on their own.
