Ubuntu announced earlier this month that it would be bringing its Linux-based operating system to mobile phones later in 2013. Now, it looks like we might see the OS on tablets, as well.
A countdown clock has appeared on Ubuntu’s website, along with the message “Tick, tock, tablet time!”
Canonical — the company behind the Ubuntu project — recently announced that the Touch Developer Preview of Ubuntu will be available for the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 4 on Feb. 21. It will also be installing the OS onto developer’s phones at the Mobile World Congress, which takes place from Feb. 25 to 28.
Tuesday’s announcement will likely be a tablet-optimized version of the OS available for developers around the same time as the smartphone version in the coming weeks.
The first Ubuntu smartphones are expected to launch in October.
