LONDON -- The Scottish National Party's success is reminding people on Twitter of a favorite Simpsons character, and it has nothing to do with Groundskeeper Willie.

Thanks to the SNP's near-sweep of Scotland in the general election Thursday night, the northern part of the UK political map is now shaded nearly solid yellow, the party's color. That led Twitter user Alex McLaughlan to make a surprising discovery.

That predicted UK map post-election. Or #thesimpsons? #GE2015 pic.twitter.com/gVldpWmY7j— Alex McLaughlan (@alexmclaughlan) May 7, 2015

McLaughlan's tweet is the earliest we've found so far with the image, although at least one other person saw the potential resemblance last month.

As you might expect, the joke is spreading far and wide on Twitter.

I don't like Twitter. Ever since Twitter I've started seeing the UK political map as Maggie Simpson.— Dan (@Dan_Turner_93) May 7, 2015

Exit polls also failed to predict number of people making UK map/Maggie Simpson gags. #ge2015— Steve (@untilnextyear) May 8, 2015

Remember, Maggie Simpson's more dangerous than she looks. Shot Monty Burns when he tried stealing candy from a baby. https://t.co/dR05zFyCrC— TallulahTangle (@TallulahTangle) May 8, 2015

The image was first posted before the election results were known; the election map shown is actually a prediction of the voting results that was published by The Telegraph.

But sure enough, the latest election results do bear some resemblance.

Of course, most election maps are drawn so that each constituency is of equal size, thereby skewing the geographic shape of the country.

So really, the UK actually looks like... early Bart Simpson?
