Widespread snowstorm hits UK, and it's a bit underwhelming

LONDON -- The UK woke up from the coldest night of the year Tuesday to a blanket of snow in many parts.

Northerly winds brought snowfall to much of the country, prompting warnings from the Met Office of widespread travel disruption amid forecasts of 10cm of snow in parts of Scotland and 5cm across the North Yorkshire Moors.

Temperatures dropped to -9.1 degrees Celsius at Katesbridge, Northern Ireland, while Wales bottomed out at -8 degrees Celsius.

However, while it draped much of the country in beautiful swathes of the white stuff, it wasn't quite as epic as it could have been. Travel was difficult for many - roads were closed, trains were cancelled, and snow ploughs brought out in force - but for much of the country it just looked a bit, meh.

Even The Met Office's warning was pretty mild.

Cold today, with some sunshine for Wales, central and western England. Elsewhere, cloudier with isolated wintry showers, weakening. I'm Dan— Met Office (@metoffice) February 3, 2015

It was enough to concern one local police force, who used a cow to demonstrate what it's like driving with a windscreen full of snow.

In other news, a news reader was hit by a snowball but carried on reporting valiantly.

More sleet and snow is expected over the course of the day.
